The Chugiak Dog Musher's Association is a non-profit club dedicated to the sport of dog mushing. Many of the members are recreational mushers. Some are participants in the Iditarod Race, The Eagle River Classic, The Women's World Championship Races and the Fur Rondy to name a few. The major facility of the club is the Birchwood Dog Mushing Trail System. The trail system is located in the Chugiak area at the north end of Fort Richardson along Cook Inlet. Junior Schdule Planning

The Junior Chugiak Dog Mushers will be doing a float for the 4th of July parade in Chugiak, and the Bear Paw, July 11th. Watch for an e-mail regarding a meeting to discuss the parades at the club house sometime later on in June. We also need to clean the club house, and paint the shipping van in the parking lot sometime this summer. After the first snow,we are planning a one dog seminar. Any one who has trained a dog to run the one dog, and those interested in finding out training tips to do so are welcome to attend.

May 5th Board Meeting Results

The new CDMA board members met May 5th, 2009. Below is a general idea from the May 5 board meeting. Volunteer needs that came out of the meeting include:

  • A race poster committee coordinator. The committee already has several people willing to do quite a bit but it needs a leader to ensure that the timeline stays on track.
  • Someone to create a list of dog sled ride and kennel tour opportunities. More details about what info should be gathered can be provided.
  • People to help do a spring cleaning on the clubhouse. Contact Jennifer (e-mail)
  • A club secretary to take over by fall. Let me know if you want to know what all that entails.

Fort Richardson Trail Access
- POSTED 02/18/09
There has been a series of incidents involving musher's non-compliance that need to be addressed immediately or the Chugiak Dog Mushers risk loosing their trail use privileges on Ft. Richardson. Most grievous was an incident this weekend where a female musher "flipped off" one of the uniformed conservation officers and refused to stop for him on the trail. There has also been a large number of eye-witness accounts of kids and adults not wearing the required safety gear and failure to use USARTRAK. Their intent is to permanently bar the female for her actions for the remainder of the season and they will not be giving warnings to club members who are not in compliance with the rules they should all be all too familiar with by now. If you plan to run on Ft Richardson military base you must register and carry an ID with you at all times. Please take a moment to read the guidlines and restrictions when training on Fort Richardson. Click here (PDF)

The weather today caused the snow to be fairly deep. The sleds were not very fast and sometimes you would see a glimps of a sled of the racer in front of you and you would think that you might have to pass them and then they would get to the fast part of the trail and never see them on the trail again. The tempature was definatly below 0 degrees. It was a fun time any way. (That was the first time that I have ever seen all the classes run on 1 day!)

JUNIOR/SENIOR & CHUGIAK 50/32 ALL A GO!

DECEMBER 17, 2008

Our trail groomers have reported in and we are a GO for junior and senior sprint racing (Sat and Sun morning) and for the Chugiak 50/32 on Sat and Sun afternoon. This means we will need MANY volunteers this weekend. Currently, we have Race Marshals for the races, and one timer for all the senior races. I don't know the status of Junior timers but I think they're OK. That leaves us still needing sign-up/membership help, starting line help, chute judges, trail guards, and timers, and I know Shirley could use help in the concession area as well. If we want to keep the concessions open for the afternoon races we will probably need someone to take charge of that. We also need folks to help mark the C50 trail on Friday, and take down the markers Sunday after the last racer. I have snow machines available to use for that effort.

I know this is the busy last weekend before Christmas, but please consider volunteering for half a day at least! Please e-mail me so I'll have some idea of how many volunteers we have!

Weeekend Senior Race Cancelled

There will be no Senior Points races this weekend (Sunday). Despite the new snow, the trails are still not adequate for racing.
For information about Junior races, contact Ron at 694-6220.

Hang onto your dog team and join three women tackling the grueling Yukon Quest Sled Dog Race. Michelle Phillips, a young Canadian mother; Agata Franczak a 48-year-old Polish adventurer; and Kelley Griffin, Alaskan veteran, test their limits racing their huskies 1000 miles through the Yukon and into Alaska's frigid Interior.Get an insider view and find out why they continue to race despite seemingly insurmountable odds; treacherous icy and unmarked trails, steep descents down mountain passes, record cold temperatures andmental exhaustion. Feel their pain as they question their abilities, and celebrate their triumphs when they overcome obstacles small andlarge. The awful realization of our insignificance and theawe-inspiring hugeness of the Great White North are recurring themesthat hit you in the head like a Northern wind chill. Tempered by the beauty of her camera's eye, the struggle of thesewomen to challenge themselves to overcome fear and fatigue in thisvast, lonely land, Bristow captures a humanity that never flinchesfrom the truth. This spirited and uplifting account of what can be achieved when you face your fears will reveal why the lesser-knownYukon Quest is considered by many to be the toughest sled dog race onthe planet.

."Bristow puts her viewers in the mushers boots. Funny, touching and
visually smart, DOG GONE ADDICTION is a dog gone good movie."

Known as the "winningest musher in the world" Jeff King is one of the top endurance sled dog racers competing today. His record includes championship finishes in the legendary, 1100-mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race, the 1000-mile Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race, and the Kuskokwim 300 Sled Dog Race, among many others. King moved to Alaska in 1975 and began his inspirational racing career by 1980.

These autobiographical short stories offer a glimpse into the heart of a champion, the rugged Alaskan lifestyle and the charismatic world of dogs. King opens his heart and mind to reveal an intimate view of himself and his unique life as he shares over thirty years of experiences. He sculpts an image of the true Alaska depicting the spirit of adventure and self-sufficiency. From a wall tent on the trap-line to the Iditarod trail in the heat of competition to the tragedy at his homestead near Denali National Park, he will carry you along in his sled and give you the ride of a lifetime.

Donna Gates King' s brilliant images of Alaska assist in rendering clear understanding of the life and challenges of the north.

Iditarod Champion Joe Runyan blends his own expertise to enhance your voyage through the pages of Jeff King' s life.
