Mushing 36/20 starts March 10 at 5PM |
Posted 02/07/12 - Mushing 36/20 starts March 10 at 5PM. Will need a preliminary interest of at least 5 teams for each event in order to hold it. The Mushing 36 is a 10 dog limited event and runs 36 miles. The Mushing 20 is a 6 dog limited event and for Purebreds, an 8 dog limited. Both events are run on beautifully groomed and well marked trails at the Beach Lake Trail system. Both events start from the posts, so it makes it easier for each musher to not need a handler(s). Please contact Val and Kurt Jokela if you are interested in racing by March 1 at valkur@mtaonline.net We will also need volunteers to make this event happen. We need 2-3 timers, trail guards at strategic points, race marshal and folks to help mark the trail system for both events. Contact Val or Kurt to volunteer.

Chugiak 50/32 Cancelled |
It is with regret that we must e-mail once again regarding the Chugiak 50/32 to cancel this race. We have a 6 mile section of alternate trail that will require work beyond that which can be accomplished with the limited volunteers that have been able to commit for this race weekend. The main trail system remains ‘pristine’ for use this weekend. We need folks to get out on the alternate and spend some time cutting out a tree that is partially in the trail that folks have been navigating around, cut out alder and generally make the entire trail system pristine for all mushers and ready for any events in the future. Our club insurance will not support the condition the alternate side is in to hold events. If we are going to hold events through the rest of this season, this needs to be done. So, carry a saw with you and pitch in and help! If you have questions or concerns, email Val at valkur@mtaonline.net or call 748-5762. ( Let me know if you have done any trail work and what you were able to accomplish.)
For the safety of the mushers and dogs the Chugiak 50/32 is cancelled. And I thank all the volunteers who were able to support this event and would invite you to volunteer for future events. Val

How the grooming will work for the 2011-12 season |
Please review these directions for trail packing/grooming for the 2011-2012 Mushing Season. We are also in need of Trail guards, Timers, Snowmachiners to set gates and sweep trails and chute judges.Contact Ron Kilian (rjk@alaska.net) or Jo Wood (woodedjo@aol.com) to get on the volunteer list!!!
- .Anyone can pack the trails with a snowmachine only (nothing behind), however , they need to pack one edge, then go back and pack the other edge. Any unpacked snow should be in the middle to the trail, not on the sides. You can go as fast as is safe to see a team coming, maybe 20 mph at most.
- If you want to use the packer or a drag behind your machine, you must not go over 5mph, and again, you will have to go over it twice, one on each edge. If you go faster you are pushing snow off the trail and giving the trail a false bottom instead of a good base. If whatever you are pulling starts to swing and not track straight behind the machine, you are going too fast.
- Ed and Paul should be the only two using Tigger and the big drag. If the edges are not packed from the beginning, Tigger or the big drag cannot be used because it falls in on the edges, and is too heavy to move. Paul said he would be willing to take phone calls re: grooming 575-9769.

Musher spotted on JBER road system |
Posted 11/08/11 - I sure hope this isn’t any of our mushers, but please read and listen to the following and stay off the JBER roads! We are working with JBER to see if we can work something out for Clunie Lake Road…nothing has been worked out, yet and the rest of the roads are not to ever be used! We will lose our privilege to train on JBER, if this behavior persists. I received this message (below) yesterday from Officer Wendland. Val -Ppresident CDMA
"We have had mushers on most of the roads again, Engineer Expressway, Firetower, N. Clunie lake rd. etc... I don't know if it's a misunderstanding or intentional, but a fresh snow does not make it an unmaintained road way. We are putting cameras out to identify the individuals.”

Important Information Training on JBER |
One of the CDMA club members was mushing on the JBER road system and not wearing a helmet and was stopped by one of the conservation officers. This resulted in a citation. I am taking this opportunity to review what we can and cannot do when training our dog teams on JBER. Here’s some key points to consider and please review the attached information sheet prior to mushing onto JBER. We cannot ever mush on a paved or unpaved road. The only exception would be on North Clunie Lake Road during the winter, if it is NOT plowed for regular vehicle use. All safety gear must be worn at all times. When you are driving your 4-wheeler during a training run, you must have your helmet on at all times and the chin strap must be secured. The only exception to this would be when you stop your 4-wheeler to get off to check your dogs. You may take it off then, but don’t forget to put it back on and secure the chin strap. You need a permit and ID to accompany it and it must be available to show to an officer upon request. You need to call and be sure JBER is open and sign yourself on and don’t forget to sign yourself off. What does a citation mean? Presently, if a citation is issued, it stays on your record for 5 years and if there is a second incident, then you will be barred from recreating on JBER for a year. This is soon to change. The General will soon sign a provision that if you receive a citation, there will NOT be a second chance. You will immediately be barred from recreating on JBER for a year. If you have any questions about any of the above, please feel free to give me a call . Val - 748-5762

Straw is here!! |
Posted 10/11/11 - Eric picked up 28 bails of the great, guaranteed weed free oat straw from Bill in Palmer. Since it was such a nice day I guess he decided to fill the truck up full. We will only need 15 bails for the winter so if anyone needs some please give us a call. We had this last year and it is the best straw we have ever had, just $10/bail.
