UPDATE: From the Family of Herbie Nayokpuk - Sunday nite 7 pm Nov. 23. 2006
First off, a BIG Thank You From the Family of Herbie Nayokpuk for the wonderful emails that we have been recieving. It means so much to Elizabeth and the family, and we do read many of them to Herbert.

The Family has had the ventilator breathing tube removed, and Herbie is now breathing on his own. He is still in a coma, and in critical but stable condition, and has been moved from the ICU to the 5th floor of the Alaska Native Medical Center.

All of your thoughts and prayers have Helped Herbert and the family thru thus far, and we ask for your continued support thru this difficult time.

It is very touching to read of the memories many of you pass along to us. Of Herbie and Joe Sr trotting down Front street to the finish line together. Of Herbie falling asleep in the bathtub in Unalakleet after checking into Unalakleet, and BeeBucks waking him up. "You Saved My Life!" Tho Herbie was probably bigger than the bathtub! Of taking us boating and berry picking up the coast from Shishmaref. We pray he will soon open his eyes and continue making memories with us.

If you would like to send the family a card, the address is

Herbert Nayokpuk
Alaska Native Medical Center Room # 516
4315 Diplomacy Drive
Anchorage AK 99508

An account for donations has been set up at any Wells Fargao branch if you would like to help defray travel and living expenses for the family during their stay in Anchorage. the "Herbert Nayokpuk Donation Account # 2526636556

Again, thank you so much from the family. For those of you who may not know me, I am married to Herbie & Elizabeth's oldest daught Shirley since 1975, and have lived next to them in Shishmaref for a total of probably 15 years or so, and we now live in Fairbanks.

"I married into an Iditarod family and had no idea what I was getting into, and it has been one incredible adventure".

Chuck and Shirley Newberg

An email address for Elizabeth and the Family is herbienayokpuk@yahoo.com She would really appreciate hearing from friends and family. Keep them in your prayers.

Legendary "Shishmaref Cannonball" Suffers Major Stroke
Monday afternoon, Nov. 13th, 77-year-old Herbert Nayokpuk, a retired musher, suffered a major stroke at his home in Shishmaref, Alaska. Luckily, there was a doctor from the hospital in Nome making a visit to the village, and was there to help. He was stabilized and medivaced directly to Anchorage and remains in critical but stable condition at the Alaska Native Hospital. He has slipped into a coma, and with prayer, we hope he will soon open his eyes.

He had a stroke in 1981, which was on the right side of the brain. This stroke was on the left side, which also controls speech. His brain waves, lungs, heart and organs all were clean and working, and he looked better than yesterday and he seems to be responding at times, but remains in a coma.

An account has been set up with Wells Fargo to help Elizabeth and the family defray travel and living expenses while Herbert is in the hospital and donations can be made at any Wells Fargo Branch, to the "Herbert Nayokpuk Donation Fund"

An email address for Elizabeth and the Family is herbienayokpuk@yahoo.com She would really appreciate hearing from friends and family. Keep them in your prayers.

JON KORTA AWARDED SEPPALA HERITAGE GRANT
For the past 9 years Jon Korta has lived in Galena, AK with his wife, Tanya, and three children, Dylan, Kaleb and Kiana. Collectively known as "TEAM KORTA," they own a small B&B and small kennel of 26 dogs. They have mushed dogs recreationally for 10 years but have only been into racing the last 3. Although they love recreational mushing, racing has raised the daily quality of care in the kennel and greatly improved their relationship and understanding of sled dogs. Jon has competed in the Quest 250, the Tustemena, the Beargrease Marathon and the Copper Basin 300. Jon has been training, racing, and learning as much as possible in preparation for Iditarod 2007.

The grant has been established to financially assist rookie mushers as well as honor the memory of a great Alaskan. The grant has been seeded by Maja Ramsey, Leonhard Seppala’s granddaughter, with a $10,000 donation and a four year commitment of $10,000 per year. It is the hope of the Seppala family and the selection committee that other persons and organizations will donate to this charitable grant with money and services, thereby increasing the outreach potential of this grant. Grant funds are administrated by Iditarod National Historic Trail, Inc., a private, nonprofit organization with 501C-3 federal tax status.

Trail Guard Continuing Education:
ASDRA will sponsoring a “update yourself” workshop for novice as well as experienced trail guards. Anyone who trail guards will be able to find some tidbits to take home. This will be geared toward all experience level and include some fun interactive stuff. Both clubs would appreciate any one from mushers who also trail guard to “coerced” friends and family to attend and get involved.

This is actually the start of project between Chugiak and ASDRA to compile a user friendly Procedure Manual that both clubs can use. The idea is to end up with a tool that can help experienced and inexperienced folks alike feel like competent and valued members of the race crew.

Open letter to the membership of the Chugiak Dog Mushers from the President:
Elections for the Chugiak Dog Mushers executive officers and board members is around the corner. A friendly committee member will be calling shortly to inquire as to whether you are willing to run for office.

Please give that some careful consideration. All of us enjoy the benefits of having an organization that promotes Dog Mushing in our community, and maintains our trail system.
Some of you may not have taken the opportunity as yet to give back to that organization by donating your time.

Donating your time is the key statement. Anyone who has served as an officer would say they they never had the time, but, made the time to make a committment to the club.
New faces are always welcome. Please consider running for office this year.

Musher Needs Your Help!
DA NEWS 12/07/05
Iditarod musher Susan Butcher has been diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. About 11,920 new cases of acute myelogenous leukemia are diagnosed each year in the United States. Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) may be called by several names, including: acute myelocytic leukemia, acute myeloblastic leukemia, acute granulocytic leukemia or acute nonlymphocytic leukemia.

Susan & her family are in Seattle for an extended stay where she'll be receiving treatment. She's going to need a bone marrow transplant. 75% of patients needing a stem cell transplant usually do not have a suitable donor in their family and need an unrelated bone marrow donor. Anyone who'd be willing to do so is being asked to get a blood test and a possible blood donation if there is a match.

How to Become a Bone Marrow Donor -It just takes a small vial of blood for you to be typed as a bone marrow donor. There are many patients who are desperately waiting to find a donor match. You may be able to save someone’s life. There are donor registry sites throughout the country.

The number to call from Alaska is 1-800-DONATE-1 then dial extension 1897, that puts you through to Seattle. They send you a registration form. You send that back in and they screen it. Once you pass the screening, they send the collection kit back with instructions on how to get your sample collected.

To find the one closest to you contact either: The American Bone Marrow Donor Registry 1-800-736-6283 The National Marrow Donor Program 1-800-654-1247 Visit www.leukemia-lymphoma.org/ for more information.

Verbatim...from an exchange on a ski report web site: "Beach Lake Trails -- Chugiak -- 11:00 am Tuesday Nov 29th, 2005 Perfect classic and skating conditions. It's now officially safe to put away the rock skis. I do have a somewhat off topic question: Where can I get men's extra insulated underwear not for my legs but for protection of Mr Winky? I wear polypro under shell pants but it definitely hasn't been working in this cold spell. Does any local shop carry something like this? Report by "VERY COLD".

The Gin Gin 120
A Mid-distance Sled dog
race for Women athletes
DANEWS 11/11/05
Paxson, AK welcomes the 1st Women’s distance dog race happening Dec. 10-11th 2005 hosted by Zoya DeNure; local resident and musher. The Gin Gin 120 was conceived as an avenue of opportunity for women to enter into the sport of dog mushing, feeling less intimidated by men (dog drivers) in numbers. Today, men drive many of the sports’ most dominant dog teams. Interested and currently active in women’s issues, Zoya’s intention is not to discriminate, but rather celebrate women in the sport. Exploring the idea of a women’s mid-distance dog race as an annual event; Zoya understands as a woman dog driver what she would like to see evolve within the sport—and that’s “growth, opportunity & fresh faces.” “ This is about women athletes getting together on common ground; to compete & have fun,” adds Zoya. ‘Bringing new women onto the trail with a sense of confidence & competency,” while running their dog teams thru some of the most beautiful, yet challenging terrain in Alaska. This race will give all women the chance to excel while giving the additional opportunity to meet and interact with others with the same goal.

Alaska Veterinarians Looking Out for Cases of Dog Flu; No Reports Yet
- The Associated Press
November 3, 2005
The spread of the bird flu is capturing headlines, but veterinarians in Alaska are on the lookout for "dog flu". The term refers to canine influenza virus, a highly contagious respiratory disease in dogs. It has been tracked to a virus that has infected horses for decades. So far there have been no reports of the disease in Alaska. Canine influenza first drew attention in 2003 when it jumped from horses to dogs and swept through racing greyhound kennels in several southeastern states. The virus spread to companion dogs in shelters, humane societies, boarding facilities and veterinary clinics in 11 states. Earlier this month it was reported in Oregon & California. Symptoms of the disease mimic kennel cough, a common canine ailment. The first sign is a cough that may last for several weeks, followed in some dogs by lethargy, fever and thick nasal discharge. Like kennel cough, canine influenza appears to be an airborne infection so direct physical contact between dogs is not required to pass the germ. "Since the pathogen is new and not widespread yet, diagnosis is still difficult", said state veterinarian Bob Gerlach. So far there is no vaccine for the virus. However, most dogs diagnosed with canine influenza experience a mild form and the fatality rate is low. He said kennels should have a separate, isolated quarantine area and emergency treatment for dealing with dogs suspected of being ill. The area also could serve as a temporary home for newly acquired animals awaiting testing.

Beth Callis
Arctic Winter Games
by Dixie Waddell - Mar 13 2004
The 2004 Arctic Winter Games held February 28 through March 6 in Wood Buffalo, Northern Alberta, were well represented by Team Alaska dog mushers. The Dog Mushing events were three days with individual times medals given on the first and third days and total team times medals on the second day: Juvenile mushers were Andrei Cavens from Anchorage and Beth Callis from Paxton. Junior participants were Sonya Cavens from Anchorage and Monique Lambert from Eagle River. The juvenile mushers raced a 7.5 km course with four dogs on the first two days and a 10 km course using five dogs on the third day. Junior mushers raced 10 km with six dogs on the first two days and seven dogs on the third day: The events for the first day were on a lake about 25 miles out of Fort McMurray while the rest of the events were held on a river in Fort McMurray.

Andrei Cavens
Beth Callis won gold ulus, the awards, for individual competition on the first and third days and she and Andrei Cavens won gold ulus for the team competition. Andrei tied for the bronze ulu on the last day of individual competition. Sonya Cavens won the gold ulu on the last day of individual competition and finished fourth on the first day. She and Monique were silver medalists in team competition. Monique suffered a dislocated shoulder on the last day of individual competition. She insisted on driving the team to the finish. Officials allowed that and followed with a snowmachine for safety. At the finish she was rushed to the hospital where all was put right. She finished the week with a sore shoulder. Team Alaska Dog Mushing received a Fair Play pin from Team for helping that team during the events and Giselle received a Fair Play pin from an official for driving the team in when she was hurt.

It will be Alaska’s turn to host the Games in 2006 and the Kenai Peninsula is gearing up for that. We look forward to having the Games back “home.”

Staying Warm on the Trail
It’s about dead air and moisture control
by Jerry Raychel
Keeping yourself warm on the trail is a lot like keeping the inside of your house warm. Your house:Your house has a furnace. - The heat generated by the furnace needs to be contained in a vessel that limits its conductance away and prevents infiltration of cold air inside.Your house has an insulation layer. Its purpose is to trap dead air, which is the best insulator or in other words a poor conductor. The insulation generally consists of a lightweight material fiberglass or polystyrene etc with lots of tiny pockets of dead air. A good insulation layer limits heat loss by conductance. For any given insulation material the thicker the layer the less the heat loss.

MOA Title 21 Section

Mark Moderow Jan 27 2004
The MOA proposals seems to indicate that a considered look be given to the process and some sort of official position be generated. Specifically, despite what Title 17 may say about kennels and licensing, the new Title 21 sections, if adopted, would make the keeping of more than five (5) animals as "household pets" an unlawful accessory use of any residential property in the Municipality (and even most commercial and industrial property!). Specifically, "kennels...relating to household pets are not an allowed accessory use." See proposed Sec. 21.05.070.D.12. On the closely related matter, "kennels" as a commercial use are proposed to be allowed in certain commercial and industrial zones, but are only permitted subject to specific site review procedures in the new R6, R7 and R9 zones- probably to be tied to revisions to the applicable provisions of Title 17. See proposed Sec. 21.05.050.B.3. This specifies that (in addition to any Title 17 requirements) that the "kennel" be set back 100 feet from any adjacent residential use or residentially-zoned property and that "[i]n the R-5, R-6, and R-9 districts, the minimum lot size for a kennel....shall be five acres." Again, this governs a "commercial use" kennel, the differentiation between a personal mushers kennel and a commercial kennel not being made. Short read is that only grandfathered facilities would be allowed to survive, and then the continuation could prove tenuous in light of any future "conditions" or "requirements" imposed by either ordinance or just by selective enforcement. The Title 21 revision project is on-line through the Municipalities web site at: http://www.muni.org/planning/prj_Title21.cfm and the first parts of the discussion drafts of Title 21 are there.

Fairbanks group saves sled dogs
RESCUE: Second Chance League finds new owners for animals.
The Associated Press - (Published: January 8, 2004)

FAIRBANKS -- An animal rescue group has formed in the Fairbanks area to help sled dogs that too often end up in the animal shelter and euthanized.Informal efforts to save sled dogs have been ongoing in the community, but this is the first official sled dog rescue organization formed in the area, where running dogs is hugely popular among some residents. The group, named the Second Chance League, involves two-time Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race champion John Schandelmeier of Paxson.Group members will scout the Fairbanks North Star Borough animal shelter to match dogs with prospective owners, said league president Lynn Orbison. The organization also will train dogs and coach would-be mushers to train dogs. The league also has a contract with the shelter to provide foster homes for promising sled dogs abandoned at the shelter until a permanent home can be found.Ten dogs currently are in the league's foster-care program."Our mission is to help sled dogs be successful," Orbison said. "I think there are a lot of people who don't want to go to the shelter, but they'll take a dog from somebody else."The fee to adopt a Second Chance League dog is equal to the shelter's $100 adoption rate. The group's organization was spurred by increased concern over the number of sled dogs abandoned at the shelter, Orbison said. The organization became official last month.Other league members are Cathy Dimon, Sherri Stephens, Carol Kleckner, Ronnie Rosenberg, Mara Bacsujlaky and Jeanne Olson, who is the manager/veterinarian at the borough animal shelter.Olson said the shelter receives about five sled dogs a week, either as strays or because their owners no longer want them. At least half are euthanized.Schandelmeier has been evaluating and training "strays and giveaways" for years, he said. Half of the musher's 10-dog team that will compete in the Copper Basin 300 Sled Dog Race this weekend are shelter dogs and strays, he said.Orbison said the league is developing a Web site and official contact number. For now, more information can be obtained from Orbison at 488-9685 or lorbison@ptialaska.net.
